Standalone Websites (vs Mapplets)
Jul 25 2008, 8:40 PM EDT
I've designed and updated some standalone websites that show off the maps. These are pretty similar to the mapplets I've previously made. The API coding is virtually identical, but the standalone-website versions require a bit more HTML and CSS knowhow. The mapplet and standalone website versions each have pros and cons, and I think some users will prefer one or the other. Because they are so copy/paste technically similar I have no problem maintaining both. So here are the beta versions for the standalone websites: http://mooniker.net/arlingtonbikeways/ http://mooniker.net/capitalbikeways/ I went with a minimalist design that uses as much screen real estate as possible. On the Arlington website, there's a pull down menu for neighborhood zooms, which I think is a good shortcut for people who aren't used to navigating online maps. If you guys have any usability/functionality suggestions, let me know. Also, I think the master/menu map and linkage ideas we were tossing around earlier would work better if programmed into these websites or mapplets rather than putting them on the My Maps. I think for now, we should just try to put good data on the collaborative My Maps, not user-interface stuff. Do you find this valuable? |

Wow. That's amazing. I started a Montgomery County map. I'm going to publicize this on the blog again soon. I think it's ready for primetime.

I think maybe I'll take the smartbike link photo down since you can get to on the menu.

3. RE: Update, Backup
Aug 5 2008, 5:40 PM EDT
I've updated the Capital Bikeways site with a few touches, and I think I'm going to concentrate on that one for now. The Arlington one is a bit redundant at this point. Also, I wrote a backup script that grabs all the kml files (data) from all of our various maps and archives it by date on my computer. I figure I'll run that weekly or so. (I put the KML links in the map directory for my own reference, and I hope Google doesn't switch these up.) So now we can manually roll back should the need arise. Yeah, I think we're ready for prime time. It's so cool to see a useful trans-jurisdictional bike map (that isn't a PDF). 4. Photos via Flickr
Aug 5 2008, 6:10 PM EDT
hey guys, I alluded to this method of putting photos on the map before, but I got around to implementing it just now and I like. Flickr is really good about feeds and geofeeds, so basically I just tied the washcycle Flickr pool to the map as an info layer. So if you check the box, all the geotagged photos in that pool pop up as placemarks on the map.It seems like at least three of us use Flickr (and actually I'm pretty sure other photo sites do geofeeds too), so Flickr group pools (or even just tags, apparently) might be a cool (and easier) way for us to organize photographic content and arrange them on the map.
