Arlington Bikeway Mapplet
Jun 10 2008, 7:15 PM EDT
I've put together a Google Mapplet for Arlington. It still needs some polish, there might be some glitches, and not every minor trail or route is drawn in yet, but the main functionality is there. I'd like to submit this to the Google mapplet directory soon, but it would be great if you guys could check it out and let me know what you think, especially usability and functionality issues.I think it would be cool to do the District like this and then pair up/cross-link/coordinate/mapplet-ize them together. Here's a link to this Arlington Bike Mapplet: http://maps.google.com/ig/add?synd=mpl&pid=mpl&moduleurl=http://mooniker.net/bikemap/arlbike.xml If you want, take a look at the source code (XML), which is referenced in that url. I also threw together a Google Maps API-ed (outsourced) version, which has the same coding/functionality: http://mooniker.net/arlbikemap/ Do you find this valuable? |

Cool.It was accepted to the Google Mapplet directory. I have to figure out how to optimize the header so that it will show up in searches for "bike map"; right now it comes up if you search for "bikeway" or "arlington". I'd like to put together one for D.C. as soon as possible (Arlington's code adapted for D.C.), and then have them linked up. Here's a mockup with the data/maps we have so far: http://maps.google.com/ig/add?synd=mpl&pid=mpl&moduleurl=http://mooniker.net/washington_dc_bikeways.xml Do you find this valuable? |

Some things are only cool enough to go to 10. This one goes to 11.How do I add to it. Do I continue adding to the other map and you'll pull it in when I'm done? Do you find this valuable? |

These mapplets are kinda like front-end user interfaces, not for editing the maps. We collaborate on the My Maps (data backend) behind the scenes and the mapplets put up and mash up that data in cool/useful ways for end users (map viewers). The D.C. proto-mapplet I just linked to above pulls its map data straight from the DC mashup map we've been working on and other My Maps. Anything we put in those maps should show up in the mapplet. If the DC mashup map hits its limit, we'll have to reorganize -- and I'll update the mapplet. I've made some dedicated placemark info maps so we can sort comments and advisories. If we put info placemarks in there, the mapplets can overlay them upon user request instead of having them permanently crowding the route maps. I've linked to these on the Mashup Map page. These mapplets pull their Arlington, Alexandria, and Falls Church data from a bunch of maps that I'm coordinating (4 for Arl, 3 for FC, 1 for incomplete Alex). I haven't opened them up for collaboration yet because they've been kinda hectic -- I've been reorganizing, splicing, merging, etc. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
