Maps We have
May 30 2008, 2:46 PM EDT
Are these all the maps we have right now or are there othersLong Trails * W&OD * C&O * Mt Vernon Trails by region * Northwest (D.C., Md.) * Northeast (D.C., Md.) * Southern (D.C., Md.) * Western (Va.) Regional DC Bike Mashup Arlington Bike Mashup Falls Church Bike Mashup Other specific Smartbike Bike shops With the master map the Washington Bikes Mashup I think we should try as much as possible not to repeat data on one map onto another. Does everyone agree? Toward that goal I might stat consolidating maps. Do you find this valuable? |

We should try to be coordinated about the scope (what type of data goes where) on each map and that scopes don't overlap. I agree that we should avoid repeating data. For example, I'm a little confused at present about whether I should draw trails on the DC/Arlington mashups or on one of the regionals. I'm not sure if the Capitol/quadrant division works, but I think no matter how we divy up the maps, we're going to run into overlap issues. My suggestion is that we keep on-street and off-street routes on separate maps. Do you find this valuable? |

Wow, lots of maps. Here's a suggestion - does this work - Use the W&OD trail as an example - On the Arlington and on the Major Bike Route maps, have a simple - non detailed line (ala the WMATA Metro Map) symbolizing the route - this way people know it is there - this icon would then link to the specific W&OD map which would then be detailed. So yes, something important like the W&OD would be on several maps - most maps it would be a relatively simple line - and then one mail it would be with as much info as our overhead can afford -- with the possibility of breaking it into segments (miles 1-20, miles 21-40, etc)

Yeah, the menu map has the word experimental in its title. I do like the idea of making the menu map highly symbolic, verging on abstract a la the Metrorail map as mentioned above.I also agree with the concept of multiple maps having the same trail, but only for the major trails. For example, Arlington and FC as regionals would have the W&OD as it passes through them, and if you overlay the W&OD detailed map over them, the effect is that the W&OD's opacity is cumulative or more prominent, which makes sense because it's like the I-66 of Northern Virginia cycling. I'm a bit confused over this, in that some of the maps can be linked to in the system (to perhaps add notes, suggested routes, etc), but while Falls Church inside the beltway is listed, I don't see a way to access that map to edit, etc. I live in the Falls Church/Annandale area, and have noted that some bike friendly roads are not marked as suggested routes. Thinking of Cherry Street from the route 50 service roads north to near the W&OD for example. Do you find this valuable? |

Firstly, ignore the list of maps on the first post of this thread. It's outdated, so for the most up-to-date list, check the wiki's Mashup Map page.Secondly, you're right to be confused because I didn't publicly link the Falls Church maps. The reason is I'm a bit confused about how to organize them. But I'll link them now. I've divided them into three maps: * Falls Church City * Falls Church North (parts of Fairfax Co. north of Rt. 50, excluding F.C. City), and * Falls Church South (parts of Fx Co. south of Rt. 50). I still find that organization a bit weird, so if you have any ideas, let me know. I ride Cherry St north of Rt. 7 every day, so I think Cherry St is a good connection to the W&OD and I've added the route you suggested. I'm glad there is someone in F.C. checking my work. Thirdly, most of our route maps so far have dealt with official routes and trails, so recommended, suggested, and cautionary routes are new ground. We should probably have a discussion about how we implement nonofficial routes -- e.g. one person's recommended route is another's suggestion, and a third's death alley. In Arlington and Fairfax counties, I've used government resources for reference of "suggested" routes and have avoided personal suggestions, with the exception of a few routes in Falls Church City.
