Menu/Nav Map
May 22 2008, 6:25 PM EDT
I suggest we should have one "menu" map, which can act as a starting point or home map -- one central place to keep track of other maps without having to come over here to the wiki or get lost in icons over there. We can draw in jurisdiction borders there instead of putting them on each map (a la current Arlington map). Instead of putting bicycle icon links to other maps on every map, we should just put them on the menu map. that can be overlaid (checkboxed) if the user wants (or doesn't want) navigation. That's a good idea - have one menu map that overlays all the other maps - and then instead of using the bicycle icons, we can use icons that are meaningful to the jurisdictions or scopes. In other words, the DC symbol for the DC map, the Arlington Symbol for the Arlington map. That's a good idea. This will also help conserve icons, as we could easily have a large set of maps involved in this project.I put the Arlington border on the Arlington map, largely to delineate the scope of the map - largely for us map'kateers, so we know what goes on this map, and what does not. Does anyone have graphic capability to create a nice Wash DC Bike Mashup Logo - and we can put that one logo on each map - and those logos will link to the menu map? Seems like we need a way on each map for those who stumble upon those maps, to find their way to the menu map.

I too think a Master map is a good idea. We could use the DC Flag as a symbol for DC for example.

Maryland has a great flag too for icons. Virginia on the other hand has an apparently violent lady exposing herself. And it might not pixelate well.

Some govts are touchy about using their "trademarks" without permission. If we have permission or if we know the jurisdiction is okay with it, fine (Fed Govt claims no copyright, but it a little hesitate with official seals). If not, we need to create our own dazzling graphics. I dont think that should be too hard. We could take typical photos from jurisdictions (Arlington is easy - could take a picture of the sign on the Curtis Trail that brags about how wonderful Arlington is for bikes).

Yeah, the government seals are just temporary. I grabbed them from Wikipedia, so in theory they should be public domain or fair use, but more importantly, they don't make good icons. They aren't easily recognizable for the general populace, I don't think. We should try to come up with better icons as soon as someone comes along with or develops graphic skills.I've taken some pictures of bike signs around town, and I might try to convert them to icons when I have time. I know how to set transparency stuff, but I'm no pixel artist. I tried to make a D.C. bike flag icon where the three stars are replaced by three bicycles, but I didn't feel it was good enough.
