iphone app
Hi, I am working on an iPhone app that displays bike lanes and paths for the DC area. I was wondering if it was ok to use your data for areas I am missing. Thanks

Map Issues
I've been having problems getting most of the maps to come up. Sometimes it will go to the right zoom, but not show anything. If I click on that map again, the key shows up on the left, but no lines. Anyone else having this problem?

Standalone Websites (vs Mapplets)
I've designed and updated some standalone websites that show off the maps. These are pretty similar to the mapplets I've previously made. The API coding is virtually identical, but the standalone-website versions require a bit more HTML and CSS knowhow.
The mapplet and standalone website versions each have pros and cons, and I think some users will prefer one or the other. Because they are so copy/paste technically similar I have no problem maintaining both.
So here are the beta versions for the standalone websites: http://mooniker.net/arlingtonbikeways/ http://mooniker.net/capitalbikeways/
I went with a minimalist design that uses as much screen real estate as possible. On the Arlington website, there's a pull down menu for neighborhood zooms, which I think is a good shortcut for people who aren't used to navigating online maps. If you guys have any usability/functionality suggestions, let me know.
Also, I think the master/menu map and linkage ideas we were tossing around earlier would work better if programmed into these websites or mapplets rather than putting them on the My Maps. I think for now, we should just try to put good data on the collaborative My Maps, not user-interface stuff.

Trails and Maps
Mooniker, I've been adding trails to the various trail maps and everything else to the DC map. I noticed on the Arlington one that you added the trails into that. Do you think the Major trails - Rock Creek, Mt Vernon and CCT for DC - should be added onto the DC map individually?

Legend/Key: Colors, Opacity, and Width
I'd like to start a discussion on the color key/legend.
Right now, on the Arlington mapplet I'm still using the legend I started out with before this wiki/group project, and I've recently been tweaking it in light of some usability considerations, and gauging my user experience but I'd like to get feedback from non-me users. Here are my usability concerns:

Arlington Bikeway Mapplet
I've put together a Google Mapplet for Arlington. It still needs some polish, there might be some glitches, and not every minor trail or route is drawn in yet, but the main functionality is there. I'd like to submit this to the Google mapplet directory soon, but it would be great if you guys could check it out and let me know what you think, especially usability and functionality issues.
I think it would be cool to do the District like this and then pair up/cross-link/coordinate/mapplet-ize them together.
Here's a link to this Arlington Bike Mapplet: http://maps.google.com/ig/add?synd=mpl&pid=mpl&moduleurl=http://mooniker.net/bikemap/arlbike.xml
If you want, take a look at the source code (XML), which is referenced in that url.
I also threw together a Google Maps API-ed (outsourced) version, which has the same coding/functionality: http://mooniker.net/arlbikemap/

Maps We have
Are these all the maps we have right now or are there others
Long Trails * W&OD * C&O * Mt Vernon Trails by region * Northwest (D.C., Md.) * Northeast (D.C., Md.) * Southern (D.C., Md.) * Western (Va.) Regional DC Bike Mashup Arlington Bike Mashup Falls Church Bike Mashup Other specific Smartbike Bike shops
With the master map the Washington Bikes Mashup
I think we should try as much as possible not to repeat data on one map onto another. Does everyone agree? Toward that goal I might stat consolidating maps.

The Path Forward
Ok, some good discussion here. I think we're moving toward an idea of a program that will deal with the limited item issue with MyMaps. Here is my proposal.
1. Create a Master Map. This map will include pushpins that connect users to each of the regional or subject maps. Each of these pushpins will be custom tailored to it's situation, so a DC map for DC, the SmartBike logo for SmartBike etc... This Map will also include key bike trails (CCT, Mt Vernon, W&OD, Rock Creek, C&O, Anacostia Trail System) and tehse will each link to their own trail map.
2. Below the Master Map will be three kinds of maps regional (I propose DC, Arl, Alex, Falls Church, Moco, and PG) subject (Smartbike, Bike Shops, WMATA) and Trail (See the list above).
3. Each of these can have submaps as well (so DC bike lanes for example) but only if needed.
Anonymous, you seem to know how to pull out the info into KML files. Do you think you could take what we have, pull it apart and put it back together in this way (If everyone agrees)?
Thoughts?

Wash Bike MAshup - Major Route Map
I think the Washington Bike Mashup is perma fried. The 100 item rule... I have been beating on the mashup to get the number of items down, and have gotten it down to about 80, and there is still a second page of items. I am betting this might be messed up until this page is thoroughly cleaned up - maybe when the enough items are deleted and we get rid of the second page, we can regain the 100 item ceiling. I am just guessing.
The Wash Bike Mashup could be the sandbox page where we encourage people to add information, that we then migrate to the other pages - one page open to contributions - and the other pages locked and only official map'kateers can mess them up.
One of my concerns is vandalism - wikis - you solve vandalism by just rolling the version back and deleting the vandalism. But with the mashup, if someone comes in and deletes the W&OD trail, then one of us is going to have to come back and redraw it. The solutions could be (1) some system of backup - is that possible? (2) Have an open collaborate mashup where anyone in the community can add new information, and all the other pages are limited closed collaborate, and only us few can edit it. Or we can even close down the maps and let designated volunteers to manage individual pages. But I really like the Web 2.0 collaboration feature.

Menu/Nav Map
I suggest we should have one "menu" map, which can act as a starting point or home map -- one central place to keep track of other maps without having to come over here to the wiki or get lost in icons over there.
We can draw in jurisdiction borders there instead of putting them on each map (a la current Arlington map).
Instead of putting bicycle icon links to other maps on every map, we should just put them on the menu map. that can be overlaid (checkboxed) if the user wants (or doesn't want) navigation.

Modular Trails
I think some of the bigger trails should get their own map. I'm not sure how many of those major ones will fit on one map, and it's easier to swap them in and out with Javascript if we keep things modular. I already started on a frontend. If anyone wants the link, PM me and I'll send it to you. (It's not ready for public consumption but it's a proof of concept).
Also, what would really be great is if some people could donate their data (coordinates, waypoints, XML, KML, whatever) of the major trails and then we can convert/import, assuming the data is free of copyright restrictions.
I feel like that would be the quickest/simplest way to get the major trails on the map, which would in turn generate a lot of interest and get more people involved to draw the smaller trails.
On the technical side, I wonder how slow/clunky the map will get once it gets a lot of data, but maybe some good javascript can alleviate that and that's a hurtle for later anyway.

Columbia Island
Though Technically part of DC, I think we should treat it like part of Arlington. It makes more sense.
